On September 2, 2026, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and city education officials announced a sweeping new classroom technology policy: a one-year moratorium on student use of generative artificial intelligence across NYC public schools from 2-K (pre-school) through eighth grade for the 2026-27 school year. The ban prohibits student-facing AI tools and companion chatbots, impacting nearly 600,000 students—roughly two-thirds of total enrollment in the nation's largest public school district.
Alongside the AI ban, the policy establishes new digital device guidelines, restricting one-to-one screen usage for younger children and recommending daily screen time caps of 30 minutes for grades 3-5 and 45 minutes for grades 6-8. In high schools, only a limited number of classrooms will participate in closely monitored AI pilot programs, while all high schoolers will receive twice-yearly lessons on AI literacy, bias, ethics, and critical thinking. Teachers will still be permitted to use approved AI tools for lesson planning and administrative workflows.
Mayor Mamdani directly challenged Silicon Valley's educational narrative ahead of the rollout: 'The tech industry wants us to believe that A.I.-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We do not see it that way.' He stressed that the moratorium is designed to preserve human connection in classrooms, ensuring children build problem-solving and social abilities alongside teachers and peers. United Federation of Teachers (UFT) President Michael Mulgrew supported the move, calling AI 'a very dangerous thing' and noting that parents are deeply alarmed by recurring AI horror stories.
The sweeping restrictions follow months of mounting pushback: in July, NYC principals were ordered to pause all AI software purchases, and more than half of the City Council signed a letter urging City Hall to halt AI expansion in classrooms. Educators highlighted that many marketed AI education apps offer dubious academic value while encouraging students to bypass critical thinking.
