Founded in Austin, Texas, in 2014 by MacKenzie Price, the Alpha school network now operates across 15 states and Puerto Rico. The school promotes a model it calls '2 Hour Learning.' On its website, the school claims: 'At Alpha Chicago, our mastery-based, AI-driven approach allows students to crush their academics in 2 hours.' The school's promotional materials openly dismiss traditional human classrooms as inefficient, writing that 'much of the day is spent on lectures, waiting for classmates to catch up, or repeating material students already understand.'
Having eliminated certified teachers, Alpha employs staff called 'Guides' to supervise classrooms, claiming that 'because AI and adaptive software handle routine academic instruction, Guides can spend more time supporting each student individually.' The model has sparked sharp criticism from educators and parents. The opening comes just days after New York City enacted a ban on student-facing generative AI across pre-K through 8th grade to protect cognitive development, while Chicago parent groups have pushed for strict limits on AI in public schools.
